Abstract (1) The mode of disruption of a glass rod under a tension or a shearing, and a glass plate under a concentrated compression are stadied, The three different parts of the cracked surface are discovered..., and they are named glossy, mat and multiple cracked surface. The formation of them are attributed to the distribution of the nucleus of the crack. (2) The strength of glass for tension, compresson and shearing are obtained, and useing the result a Mohr's diagram is constructed. The direction of a cracked surface for the stress is determined, and it is founed that the cracked surface is a surface of revolution of a logarismic spiral, a logarismic cylindrical surface or a plain surface. (3) With respect to many practical examples, the theories are discussed.show more
