Abstract	This paper deals with the longitudinal vibration of a finite elastic cylinder, one end of which is connected to a very large elastic system, and its decay due to the energy flow through the junction i...nto that elastic system in the form of divergent elastic waves. It is pointed out that, in the case of longitudial vibrations, even with small amplitude, this sort of decay should not be disregarded compared with those due to other different causes and especially it plays a decisive role in the vibration of a tower caused by the shock of an earthquake.show more
