Abstract A half-empirical theory of plastic buckling of a column due to a longitudinal impact is developed by taking the fact that the buckling modulus defined by Engessor-Kármán varies along the column into c...onsideration. The distribution of the compressive stress and that of the corresponding strain along the column, caused by the impact just prior to buckling, are assumed to be of the hyperbolic pattern. The upper limit of the mode of plastic buckling and the duration of buckling are also discussed in the case of a column with uniform distributed stress. Numerical examples of the critical stress and of the permanent buckling mode due to the impact are illustrated using the results of numerical examples on the plastic wave theory given by M.P. White and Le Van Griffis.show more
