Joint seminar of Kyushu University Library and Department of Library Science in Graduate School of Integraded Frontier
Theme: Sciences The Use and Assessment of Research Impact Measures in the University

A seminar on “Research Impact Indicators” will be held as a joint seminar of Kyushu University Library and Department of Library Science in Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences. In this seminar, as part of a strategic partnership with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we invite a vice provost and librarians from the university. They will introduce research impact measures developed by the university library. Assessment of research outcomes is becoming increasingly important for measuring research impact and university ranking. There are various evaluation indicators proposed. This is a good opportunity to discuss what qualities are important when measuring research impact by sharing the practices at the University of Illinois Library. Everybody interested in research impact measures is welcome, so please join us.

Abstract:
University administrators are using research impact metrics in a number of ways. Research impact data is being used: as an assessment tool for measuring faculty and research group productivity; in promotion and tenure processes; in grant and funding applications; and in program and institution rankings. Libraries are partnering with other university units in the gathering and delivery of these research impact measures. While libraries have long utilized visualization techniques to assess services and describe collection characteristics, the introduction of custom tools for processing scholarly databases has provided libraries with the ability to extract a variety of research productivity values. The University of Illinois Library has developed a system for generating dynamic and interactive visualizations and dashboards for displaying research impact data at the individual faculty or research group level. This presentation will describe the elements of the Illinois research visualization system and look at the relationships between the various available research measures.
