The Design Library of Kyushu University will hold an event to exhibit and distribute a zine created jointly by Japanese and international students at Ohashi Campus.
We will also hold a tea party event on August 4 (Mon.), where you can interact with the students of the zine team and other participants with a cup of coffee.

What is a Zine?

A zine, an abbreviation of 'magazine', is a kind of independent publication created by an individual or a small group.
It does not have a fixed theme and style, and persons who make it can express their favorite things and their ideas.

Purpose and Detail

Most of the exchange students at Ohashi Campus will complete their programs in Japan and go back to their countries in August. On this occasion, some international students and their Japanese friends created a project to make a zine, in which they express what they have seen and felt during their stay in Japan.
Its overall theme is 'Sonder': a new coinage in English. It means the state that you realize that each person who is going past around you has a life as vivid and complex as your own.
They selected high-quality paper for printing. For example, they used Mino washi paper, a brand of traditional Japanese paper, as main-text paper. In addition, the book-binding is handmade with stitching threads.

Comment by a Student of the Zine Team

'Sonder' is a quiet realization that everyone around you has a life as full and detailed as your own. People you pass on the street, sit next to on the bus, or see in the background of a photo—they're all living out their own stories as the main character. Each person moves through the world with a different lens, a unique filter shaped by their memories, routines, hopes, and fears. It's easy to forget, but everyone you pass holds an entire world inside them. Inspired by that realization, we created a zine—and we're sharing it with you.
