【67th Cuter Café】How do you say “Donburako”? ~Translating and Decoding Japanese Folklore~

Meet Friends, Learn Culture, Have Fun!
This interactive workshop uses Momotaro, one of Japan’s best-known folktales, to explore language and cultural differences through both Japanese and English.
How would you translate expressions such as donburako or kibi dango into English?
Through quizzes and translation activities, participants will discover the fun and challenges of language while enjoying casual conversations with both international and Japanese students.
Anyone interested in languages, culture, or intercultural exchange is welcome to join!

I first became interested in English in high school and have continued learning it ever since. As a member of KYURIOUS, a student organization in the Faculty of Agriculture, I enjoy interacting with international students and exploring different cultures through language. I hope this event inspires you to discover how fun and fascinating English and translation can be!

I spent a year studying in the UK through an exchange program. Inspired by that experience, I would like to create opportunities for international and Japanese students to connect and learn from one another.

- Icebreaker Quiz
Start the event with a fun team quiz featuring Japanese and English expressions inspired by Momotaro, including onomatopoeia and proverbs. - Exploring Momotaro in Two Languages
Read and compare the Japanese and English versions of Momotaro and discover how language and culture shape the way stories are told. - Translation Workshop
How would you translate words like donburako or oni? Working in groups, we'll discuss how language can convey cultural meanings, images, and nuances. - Free Conversation
After the workshop, feel free to stay, chat, and get to know other participants.
