Kyushu University Medical Library (Hospital campus), 1F Exhibition Room

The year 2026 marks the 200th anniversary of Philipp Franz von Siebold's visit to Edo (present-day Tokyo).

During the Edo period, some of the Western visitors who came to Dejima in Nagasaki studied Japan and introduced its culture, society, and natural history to Europe. Siebold was one of the most famous among them.

At the same time, Japanese scholars traveled to Nagasaki to learn about new knowledge from the West. They shared what they learned throughout Japan in the form of Rangaku (Dutch Studies), which played an important role in the development of science and medicine in Japan.

This exhibition features rare materials from the collections of Kyushu University Library and introduces the intellectual exchange between Japan and the Netherlands during the Edo period.
